Why isn't my business showing up on ChatGPT?

You asked ChatGPT for the best provider in your city and a competitor came up instead. That usually is not a penalty. AI assistants answer from the public information they can find and understand for that exact question, and many local businesses have little that answers it clearly.

First, test the right question

Asking for your own business name only tells you whether the assistant knows you exist. Customers ask for a service in a place: 'Who are the best home inspectors in Scottsdale?' Test several service-and-city questions, on more than one engine, and write down which businesses and sources appear. One answer is a snapshot; answers vary between runs.

The usual reasons local firms are missing

Most gaps fall into a few groups. None of them is fixed by a single trick.

  • · Your website does not plainly state the services and the cities you actually serve.
  • · Your business name, phone or service area differs between your site, directories and your Google Business Profile.
  • · The pages that answer buyer questions do not exist — competitors have them, or are covered by third-party lists the assistant cites.
  • · Pages are blocked from crawlers or only render after heavy scripts.
  • · There are few independent mentions of the business on sites assistants already cite in your market.

What to look at by trade

The questions differ by industry, so check the ones your buyers actually ask.

  • · Home inspectors: inspection types, service area, report turnaround, licensing where required.
  • · Title and escrow: counties served, transaction types, how to open an order.
  • · Real estate agents: neighborhoods, buyer vs. seller focus, brokerage.
  • · Photographers: specialties, coverage area, how booking works.
  • · Insurance agencies: product lines carried and whether you represent multiple carriers.

What fixes it — and what doesn't

Correct and align your facts first, then publish clear, specific answers to the questions where competitors appear. Don't invent locations, reviews or credentials, and don't mass-produce near-identical city pages. Nobody can guarantee a recommendation or a timeline; engines choose their own sources, and changes are usually measured over weeks or months.

Common questions

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?
No. There is no paid placement for organic assistant answers. Visibility depends on the public information available for each question.
How fast can it change?
There is no reliable timeline. Re-test the same questions on the same engines over weeks and compare, rather than reacting to a single answer.
Is ChatGPT the only engine that matters?
No. Buyers also use Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude, and answers differ between them. Check several.
