What are AI visibility tools?

An AI visibility tool asks AI assistants the questions your buyers ask, records the answers, and tells you whether your brand was named. That is the whole job. Everything else these products do — competitor comparison, sentiment, content suggestions — sits on top of that one measurement.

What they measure

A tool takes a list of buyer questions — "best CRM for small teams", "alternatives to X" — and puts each one to several AI engines on a schedule. For every answer it records which brands were named, in what order, with what sentiment, and which sources the engine cited.

  • · Citation rate: the share of answers that name you
  • · Share of voice: how often you appear against named competitors
  • · Engine split: ChatGPT may name you while Perplexity does not
  • · Sources: the pages an engine quoted to build its answer

How they differ from SEO tools

A rank tracker tells you where a page sits on a results page. An AI visibility tool tells you whether a brand is mentioned inside a generated answer, where there is no list of ten blue links and often no click at all. The unit of measurement is the brand, not the URL.

The practical consequence: fixing AI visibility is usually about publishing the specific pages an engine needs to cite — comparisons, category rankings, direct answers to the question — rather than chasing backlinks.

What they cost

Entry-level trackers start around $40–$100 a month. Suites that bundle AI tracking into an existing SEO product charge from about $65–$130 a month. Enterprise platforms are quoted on request and run into five figures a year.

How to choose

Three questions separate them: which engines does it actually query, does it show you the answer text or just a score, and does it help you fix what it finds. A tool that reports a number without the underlying answers cannot tell you who got named instead of you — which is the only detail that leads to an action.

Common questions

Are AI visibility tools the same as GEO tools?
Mostly yes. GEO stands for generative engine optimization; tools sold under that label measure the same thing and usually add content production on top.
Do I need one if I already rank well in Google?
Ranking well helps but does not guarantee anything. Engines frequently build answers from comparison articles and category round-ups rather than vendor sites, so brands with strong search rankings are routinely left out of AI answers.
How often should visibility be checked?
Answers vary between runs, so a single check is noise. Daily or weekly checks across several engines are the minimum for a trend you can trust.
